Google Rolls Out New “Popular Products” Listings in Search Results

By: Deirdre Hall

Looking for a new way to shop? Google recently announced its new shopping section — “Popular Products” — for apparel, shoes and similar searches, which now appears in mobile search results.

Previously, Google’s product listings were only generated from paid shopping ads. Google now displays these results organically, which experts say is an effort to compete with Amazon and other marketplaces.

This is a big change for e-commerce businesses. Here’s how it could affect your search engine results page (SERP).

When browsing on your mobile devices, you’ll now see the new SERP feature Popular Products, which allows you to discover more stores and brands quickly and easily. It also lets you filter by style, department and size, as well as view images and reviews.

According to Google Best Practices, visibility of these products in this new section is being generated by both product feeds from Google’s Merchant Center and Product Schema markup. E-commerce websites should also comply with Google’s guidelines when it comes to providing a safe and secure shopping experience. For example, make sure to provide consumers with a secure checkout process, billing terms and conditions, return policy and accurate contact information.

Another interesting SERP feature relevant for our local business clients is “Search by photos.” We now see these results appearing for product searches as well.
